Alan McLennan — Freelance M & E Project Manager — Resident Engineer — Clerk of Works — Commissioning Manager

I am a graduate electrical engineer with many years experience in mission-critical power design and installation. My career started with a national telecom agency, from where I moved into UPS manufacturing, specialising in large systems, and their design. This took me to many parts of the world, with client facing development meetings, assisting with installations and commissioning, and investigating problems and failures. From here, the opportunity arose to become a freelance project manager for a major UPS manufacturer, which led to a position with the M&E consultant for that project, on another new-build data centre for a prestigious client. That project required oversight of a wider range of specialisms, including fire and security. Through personal recommendation from the contractor, I was approached by another major consultancy in the sector to act as RE for a data centre project. I have now been with this consultancy for over 5 years on a wide variety of data centre projects, both new-build and upgrades, which, in a number of ways, are much more challenging than new-builds.

In between project activities, I have joined the data centre M&E team in the office, where I have assisted in writing and updating specifications, evaluated tender responses, carried out investigations, studies, and surveys for clients, failure and fault analyses, and most of the myriad of tasks required of an M&E consultant. I also enjoy mentoring the younger engineers, where I try and encourage them to broaden the scope of their activities, taking on tasks outside their comfort zone, and to think of alternative ways of addressing and resolving issues.

Although I am not permanent staff, I like to build a personal relationship with the team, and I want them to feel that I am part of the team.

Every project, large or small, involves equipment commisssioning and system testing. Site testing should complement the equipment factory testing, and my experience as both a supplier and consultant, where I have reviewed, rejected, contributed to, and compiled commissioning programmes, enables me to assist you with any of these tasks.
